History of Galena

History

Our cottage was originally called South View and was renamed to Galena a few years ago by the previous homeowners.

Galena, also called lead glance, is the natural mineral form of lead sulfide. It is the most important ore of lead and an important source of silver.

In the 1930’s the front of the snug was the local shop, we’re not sure when this closed and converted to a home. The cottage was extended to the rear in the 1980’s.

Galena Cottage sits on an old lead seam, called the ‘White Rake’. Signs of mining can be seen with the remains of the raised workings in the paddock behind the cottage. The paddock is currently used for grazing by the locals; please do not enter the field.

In 1755, two stone coffins were found when a cairn was excavated, and surrounding these were seventeen other remains which spread out in a radial way, although another source says there were seventeen coffins, and gives the date that they were found during the construction of a turnpike road as 1759. Not much is known about who was buried in the coffins.
